Finding Calm with our Nervous System Reset

by Kerrin Bain

“Stress is not just a psychological state. It’s a physiological event that affects the immune system, the cardiovascular system and the nervous system.”

DR. GABOR MATÉ

Dr. Gabor Maté is a leading expert in the field of trauma and its effects on the nervous system and physical health. His work emphasises the fact that stress and trauma imprint themselves on the nervous system and over time manifest as chronic stress, illness or dysregulation. This understanding challenges the traditional approach of treating symptoms in isolation and instead places the focus on the whole person. It allows us to see that we have agency in healing ourselves, for trauma and stress are not defined by what happens to us, but by what happens inside of us. Two individuals may experience the same event, yet their responses will differ depending on their unique nervous system patterns.

In a world where stress and burnout are practically trending topics, the real journey to healing lies in regulating the nervous system. With this in mind, Emma and I, cappuccinos in hand, plotting like two conspirators of calm, began dreaming of an experience that would weave together breathwork, meditation and TRE (Tension & Trauma Release Exercises). Emma, the yogi, brought her wisdom of movement; I, the Life Coach and TRE enthusiast, brought my knack for shaking things up (literally). We placed our event on a Sunday evening, that delicious threshold between the weekend’s close and the week’s beginning. And thus, Nervous System Reset was born.

Fast forward a year, and here’s what you can expect when you join one of our immersive 90‑minute resets…

With The Space Between as our sacred canvas and the sun sinking toward the ocean, we welcome guests with anticipation. The horizon sparkles, the orange glow of sunset draws the eye, and —forgive me, as a frustrated writer, waxing lyrical is my superpower. But truly, whether you’re a local or have crossed oceans to land amongst our fynbos, there’s nothing quite like walking down the path toward our studio. Frogs croak, sunbirds flit and our guests slip off their Birks, padding toward mats that wait like magic carpets, ready to whisk them off to Destination Calm.

We begin with the breath. Simplicity sets the rhythm, thoughts loosen their grip and we move gently inward. Music drifts through the room, weaving around us, as our collective heartbeat steadies. A softness enters the body, the parasympathetic nervous system takes the wheel and we prepare for deeper work.

Then comes TRE. We find our feet, check in with the body and with gentle movements invite the tremor mechanism to awaken. At first, it’s subtle… a ripple through the psoas, a flutter in the thighs, a hum in the legs. Some tremors whisper, others roar, all release tension. Here’s the beauty, we don’t need to analyse every twitch or trace the tension back to its origin story. The body knows what it’s doing. Stress, trauma and the daily grind lodge themselves in our tissues, and TRE is the body’s way of saying, “Thanks, but I don’t need to carry this anymore.” So we let it go. And when we do, something magical happens. More space opens up inside us and more space in the body means more capacity for life. It’s like clearing out the cluttered garage of your nervous system, suddenly there’s more room for joy, creativity and calm to park themselves comfortably. (And yes, I sound like a second‑hand car salesman rattling off TRE’s benefits, but honestly, it’s that good.)

By now twilight has wrapped around us, the sun has slipped beneath the horizon and gratitude fills the room. We enter the final stage: meditation. Guided stillness drops us deeper, grounding us in peace. The nervous system clocks ‘regulation’ and the busy mind rests.

And so, our reset concludes, a 90‑minute masterclass in the art of finding calm. We stretch, smile, roll mats, fold blankets and step back into the world. Above us, the night sky unveils its celestial show, reminding us that although we may be small, we are woven into something infinitely magnificent.

I am deeply passionate about the body’s innate capacity for healing, about its quiet genius in finding regulation as we rise and fall with the currents of life. Time and again, my own journey has shown me that when calm resides within; the soul finds rest, peace descends and inspiration floats to the surface.  Whether its breathing, TRE or meditation or the whole lot that flows your boat, come join us and give your Nervous System the reset it deserves.
